Recently, I read an article about a designer's opinion towards traditional craft. There are many traditional craft can be replace by machinery nowadays, instead of using traditional techniques because it's take a lot of time. However, in this article, the designer believed that by exploring traditional craft techniques and materials can finding new inspirations.
But what motivated the designer to design with craft? According to what I have understand in this article, I think the designer's motivation is he wants to give the trees an economic value through good design. In UK, they have a huge unmanaged woodland in front of his house, and he thinks that it's a wastage of resources so he is trying to show people the beauty of native hardwoods using design.
I think that people will understand when they know more about the objects and materials like people in UK started to accept misshapen fruit or vegetables, and started to ask the supermarkets to offer more British-grown produce. Also, the creativeness of making can make people more interests about craft again. They will always be someone to appreciate its beauty.
After I research about traditional craft, I decide to choose chinese dough figurines making. It is a kind of chinese folks arts. It seems to simply made but it has high artistic value. The dough figurines are different with they clay we used to play, dough figurines are made of refined flour, glutinous rice flour, salt, preservatives and sesame oil, for collections; while if made of wheat starchand cornstarch, it is edible. I chose this craft is because I think that dough figurines can reflect people's creativity and I'm interested to know more about it.
