Nowadays, designers have their freedom to propose alternative visual identities for the client and the venue or site. They can be playful with materials and propose innovative solutions. They are often required to consider how a brand identity can be reinforced through the selection of colour and materials. For this blog, I visit two types of interior (F&B outlet and Non F&B outlet) which I chose Innisfree and Heuk Hwa Dang to compare the aesthetic, functional and technical properties of the materials in their outlet designs.

Innisfree is an eco-friendly green life for healthy beauty from Jeju island. I visited its retail shop at G1.70, Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, 3, Jalan PJS 11/15, Bandar Sunway, 46150 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Heuk Hwa Dang is a Korean F&B outlet that sells premium tea and dessert. I visited the retail outlet down the street that near my hostel. Address: 57, Jalan SS 15/8a, Ss 15, 47500 Subang Jaya, Selangor.

The materials that I had identity:

In Innisfree

In Heuk Hwa Dang-

Project Innisfree Heuk Hwa Dang Reflective notes

Walls -Painted white -Painted white In both outlets, their walls

-Artificial plants on some -Marble textured on toilets walls are painted white to stand

wall and columns Issues: Might easily dirty out their products.

-Grey bricks wallpaper to

differentiate an area

Issues: costs

Floors -White square porcelain -Vinyl wood textured flooring The materials used in the

tile -Black concrete tiles in toilet non F&B outlets is

Issues: costs and difficult Issues:Not eco-friendly (difficult suitable for wet areas

to repair to recycle), short lifespan which they have sinks for

people after test their

products; however, F&B outlets used the flooring that can easily clean because theirs products are foods and drinks which might get dirty if flip.

Ceilings -White square -Open ceiling In both cases, they used

conventional ceiling Issues: Expensive spotlights for lighting and

-Spotlights on ceiling stand out their products.

Issues: none

Fixtures

At Innisfree, they covered their electric panel in a cabinet and the colours are match with the wallpaper.

At Heuk Hwa Dang, they used the black curtain to cover

their kitchen and pipe and their toilet so customers will

not feel no appetite to use their meal.

They also used acrylic to cover the bugs exterminator.

As a conclusion, both outlets are comes from a same country (Korea) and their designs of their colour choosing is a bit same. They choose two different colour and a white to stand out the simpleness of their brands. They also good at hiding their electric panel or piping. The interior of both are clean and simple so that it allow clients have a comfortable environment to stay longer in their store.
