Last week, we have '5 chairs challenge' in our class. 5 chairs challenge is about how we design chairs using 5 methods for the specified characters we have randomly chose. What I had chose is a girl who named Lisa in Simpsons.Based on the paper below which described the story of Lisa, I need to find what she needs then I can design the chairs for her. So, I had identified that she needs a comfortable relaxing chairs for her to rest up her muscles.
Firstly, we need to sketch out 3 different designs of chair for the specific character in 5 minutes. These is what I draw:

Most of my chair designs have armrest and some more looked like sofa and its long so Lisa can rest her arms or legs or head by lying on the chair. The one that hanging is actually because I think that Lisa is a energetic person so maybe when she sit she also wanted to move here and there so I sketch it hanging so it looks like it can bounce.

Secondly, we have 5 minutes also to cut a chair using cupboard and scissors only without using glue or anything to stick them up. (On the right handed side) The chair I made can bounce so Lisa and also move around by sitting on her chair. Then, we need to bend a chair in 5 minutes also using only wires. So, what I have (the second right) is I tried to bend a sofa but it kinda tricky for me to bend using wires so it was a bit fail. Later, we used modeling clay to create our chair which is the pink-purple one in the picture. It is kinda a bit look a like with one of my sketched chair in the picture 1. Lastly, we used toothpicks and tape to build the chair. Well, it (the left one) also a bit fail because it can't really stand correctly.
So, the material that I mostly enjoy is the cupboard because the chair I made I think is more suitable for Lisa to use and it is more successful compare to others. The least material that I liked is the wire because it need to bend here and there and I not good at with bending things. The material that had best expresses the essence of the chair I drew is the modelling clay because clay can be easily create a thing and also can erase by taking out a bit. Along these method process, what I have changed with my chairs are sometimes ugly and sometimes ok. I learnt that I maybe can also explore using different kinds of method instead of just using papers and sketch on it only. While I stuck at the part of using wires, I looked back to my sketches so sketches is also important too to look back what we did. By using the design principles that I identified, I can be more focus with the keywords and no need to think others different unrelated designs of chair.
